Most of the time we fill in the pioneer distressing with clearcoat [no stain] to maintain the character/history while making practical/easy to clean/durable ect. However, some customers really want to feel the original distressing, in which case offer a simple polyurethane finish [no epoxy filling], which is what this desk customer opted for. While less practical, there is something cool about the original texture of the distressing being maintained. See pics!

While most of customers opt for the epoxy + polyurethane 2 stage finish [or a light epoxy thickness, medium thickness option], for the most extreme rustic look, we can skip the filling stage completely. While this will forgo a lot of practicality in terms of cleaning and durability, it may be the best option; just depends on how you are going to use to the table.
