Our Hand-Hewn Pedestal Table: Displaying Pioneer Ingenuity of the Past

Our most popular pedestal option is the hand-hewn posts option. We use a single beam on round table and smaller sqaure/rectangular table, and more as the tables get larger and larger.

The beauty of hand-hewn posts is wereÂ are part of the large structural beams in an old barn frame. They were broad-axed, by hand, by a pioneer 100+ years ago. Imagine using a broad-ax to size all the beams for a barn. This is becoming a lost art. Check out some sample picture of this option on an (unfinished) reclaimed wood table below:

A hutch provides various kinds of storage options. Our custom reclaimed wood hutches are made from 1″ grainery board, which comes from the interior of the barn. We finish with a thick polyurethane finish for ease of cleaning.

63″ Reclaimed Wood Kitchen Table in Beamsville, Ontario with Epoxy Finish

The two stage epoxy + matte polyurethane we invented in 2009 allows us to keep nearly all the original distressing. Since we keep all the distressing, our tops have a very unique, authentic look. Obviously, this means at the unfinished stage our product is very rough. We fill in the cavities and make the softwood durable and easy to clean. We then bring the shine down with matte polyurethane. Check out this reclaimed Pine table we made for a home in Beamsville, Ontario [see pics below!]:

Even our post style tables can come with drawers. We basically add a skirt, and then install the drawers into the skirting. They can come with or without handles. 10 ft Reclaimed Pine Threshing Floor Harvest Table in Baden, Ontario

It’s always a good idea to consider the geometry of your space and fixtures when determining the size and placement of your table. For example, windows, chandeliers, and the size and shape of the space. We typically recommend at least 3 ft clearance on every side, and keep in mind your high traffic areas. Check out this reclaimed Pine harvest table we made for a customer in Baden, Ontario. The table is nicely centered and in relation to two large windows and a central chandelier.

Check out the amazing tones in the table top. This is because our unique epoxy finish allows us to keep nearly all the original patina and distressing, creating a very distressed – yet practical – top. Check out pictures below!
