7 ft Reclaimed Pine Cottage Harvest Table with Black Skirting and Legs

A good way to create contrast between wood grains is a black base. With a wood top and wood floor things can get a bit “busy” looking, especially if the floor has a very dominant grain. This is what we did on the harvest table below. The skirting and legs were painted black with a polyurethane topcoat. Keep in mind even when painted a solid color the barnwood distressing is still quite visible – see pictures below!

7 ft Reclaimed Pine Harvest Table with Turned Legs in St. Catherines, Ontario Townhome

We frequently tell the customers who come to our showroom that our tables “look even better in yourÂ home than in the showroom” given the lighting. We have industrial tube lighting typical of industrial units. Most homes, however, will have pot lights or a chandelier. The more focused lighting really emphasizes the beautifully distressed wood and aged patina of our table tops. The table below is a prime example. This harvest table was custom built for a customer with a townhouse in St. Catherines, Ontario. It emphasizes how much of the barnwood character we are able to maintain given the two stage epoxy and polyurethane finish we invented.

Our naturally finished reclaimed wood tables also have a broad range of tones in a single top; ideal for bringing all the tones together in a space and acting as a centerpiece. We’ve done quite a few tables for Ontario wineries. TheÂ warm, unstained, authentic distressing of our reclaimed wood tables – combined with ourÂ waterproof clear-coat finish – make our tables ideal for wine tasting and wet spaces. A lot of the value of wine aligns with the value of reclaimed wood.Â At the risk of sounding pretentious – aged wood pairs very well with aged wine. We had the pleasure of working for Palatine Hills inÂ Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (see pictures below).

Large Reclaimed Hemlock Reclaimed Wood Harvest Table in New York State, USA

The great thing about reclaimed wood tables is they work in nearly every design scheme. With the straight lines design, aged distressing, pioneer history, and clearly “un-carpentered” tops they have a place of their own. We’ve delivered the same table to a very modern space, and the next day to the most rustic cottage – and they looked great in both!Â

This reclaimed wood harvest table (see below) we custom made for a more formal dining room in New York state. The range of tones in the top worked well with the range of tones in the floor. Soft parsons chairs break up all the wood. WeÂ captured the beautiful distressing in the table top – see pics below!

Beautiful Reclaimed Round Table in Open Concept Kitchen – Kitchener, Ontario Home

Our main specialty is maintaining as much of the original distressing in the raw material as possible. You can’t beat (or replicate) wood that has been authentically distressed over the course of 100+ years. Stains, nail holes, saw marks, dings, scratches and a lot of other types of character are visible. We frequently will even have straw and other barn-related organics still in the holes in the final product. To finish this characterÂ with a light clear-coatÂ would make it very difficult to clean, and the beauty of the distressing would eventually become overshadowed by the inconvenience of cleaning and constantly finding a spot to place your glass without it falling over. The beauty of the finish we introduced in 2009 (epoxy and polyurethane on reclaimed wood surfaces) is we can make these heavily distressed surfaces practical for every day use. This round table we made for customers in Kitchener, Ontario is a great sample of the character we maintain. We also broke up the wood grain in the floor and table top with some sturdy wormy maple chairs painted black.

Toronto Reclaimed Wood Pedestal Table with Hand-Hewn Beam Base

Check out this kitchen & dining table we made for a customer in Toronto. Reclaimed Pine has reddier tones than hemlock and larger knots. Our epoxy/polyurethane finish allows us to keep nearly all the distressing in the barnwood floor boards. The original barnwood edges are sometimes confused with live edge since there is so much wear on the edges. All the character on the edges result from years of the raw materials first job – being a barn floor. Whatever went on in the old barn over the course of 100+ years can seen on the old barn floor boards. Smaller tables [typically 5 ft or less] are typically best suited to having a single pedestal base. This keeps the base out of the way for maximum seating.

Reclaimed Wood Table with Mill Chairs, End Benches and Leaf – Richmond HillÂ Dining Room

Benches on the end of a table are great way to get two people on the ends. Typically ends are too narrow for two chairs; but a bench can easily.

This customer in Richmond Hill did this on the ends of their table. The reclaimed wood trestle table also had 8 of our Mill style chairs with a black/sandthrough finish. The black chairs break up the wood grain between the floor and the table top; making the table top the centerpiece and avoiding overkill of wood. An 18″ leaf extension on the end making the table an even 10 ft when extended – adding two more seats on special occasions.

Many struggle what size to make a custom coffee table. It depends on the degree of traffic in the space, the shape of the space and the couch it goes beside. Generally I recommend being less than 2 ft from the edge of the seating so that it is close enough to put a drink down on or put feet up on. Also staggering length relative to other furniture in the space tends to look best. Check out this coffee table we made for a client in Caledon, Ontario.Â This table has our greytone treatment; providing aÂ lighter, softer look with the color of unfinished.
