Toronto Harvest Table with Matching Bench – Ontario Reclaimed Wood

The one table base design that typically calls for a shorter-than-table-length bench is the harvest style base. Some spaces are sufficiently roomy – negating the need for the bench to slide under the table when not in use. Most, however, can use the convenience of moving the bench out of the way, particularly in high traffic areas. Consequently, we usually custom build harvest table benches to fit between the table legs (typically table length minus 2″ inset minus 4″ leg size).

Wide Reclaimed Wood Sawbuck Table in Meaford, Ontario Home

A wider table will accommodate two seats on the ends. Typical width is 42″ – considered the “sweet spot” for passing across; but if you have the space (roughly 3′ on every side) a wider width may be beneficial. This is typically done on tables over 8 ft; as most want to still maintain the long table look (the wider you go, the more sqaure a table will look).

Straight Lines Modern Base on Reclaimed Wood Round Table – Kitchener, Ontario Home

Most of our reclaimed wood round table customers opt for a pedestal base – either an old hand-hewn beam post base or reclaimed cedar hydro pole base. For a more modern – straight lines – look you may, however, opt for a threshing floor walls base – essentially vertical 2″posts in a + shape to provide stability. In modern spaces, or spaces where the table top standing out is crucial, a high gloss finish may be suitable. Many of our customers opt for the opposite – matte. There are, however, some applications/preferences wherein a high gloss finish is most ideal. The degree of distressing we maintain shines!! Old Ontario Barns: A Window Into A Simpler Past

It’s remarkable to think of what was common place in the era the pioneer barns (that dot our landscape) presided in. Ontario is blessed to have many of these barns remaining; one of the few spots in North America. Many structures are (thankfully) being maintained and are sometimes even still being utilized. A lot, however, are falling into disrepair. This means that many barns will go to waste – an unfortunate reality. While the disappearing of these structures is unfortunate, the re-utilization of the wood found in these aged structures preserves the historical significance of pioneer barns to Canadian culture. We find pleasure in maintaining this history, as best we can, in reclaimed wood furniture.

These old barns are beautiful, even when in a decrepit state, so I figured I would dedicate a blog post exclusively to them. We make it around Ontario a lot (given we sell a niche product) and have snapped a few pics of barns that caught our eye. See below for pictures!

A Closer Look at our Favourite Raw Material: Reclaimed Threshing Floor Boards

I named this company after this raw material and have frequently had the question – what is threshing floor? The simple answer is furniture made from threshing floor boards. What are “threshing floor” boards? Any old barn floor in Ontario has threshing floor boards. It is an industry term that describes barn floors. They floors are ‘threshing floors’ because of their historical use; namely the separating (“threshing”) of grain from a stalk. The threshing floor boards not only have the thickness (around) 2″ for a solid, heavy duty table top, they also are the most exposed boards in a barn – to whatever might have occurred in a barn over the course of a century. They maximize sturdiness and distressing – making them our favorite part of old barn. See below for lots of pictures of threshing floor boards in their raw form (before we start to work with them). Our goal is that nearly all the distressing you see here in the raw form is kept through to the final product!

Reclaiming Wood from Ontario Pioneer Barns: A “Behind the Scenes” Look! Step inside old Ontario barns

The process of reclaiming wood properly is a time-consuming, tedious effort. Unfortunately many demolitionist in the past have forgone the effort it takes to dismantle a barn properly and opted to burn the wood.. a cultural tragedy, in our opinion. The history in old wood is remarkable. A lot of has to do with simple economics.. if the value of the wood reclaimed exceeds the price a demolitoner can charge for the cost of demolition, he or she will opt to reclaimÂ rather than destroy. The process of reclaiming properly is more than a “crash and burn” approach. It is a good thing reclaimed wood has received the appreciation it deserves in the past few years, as more demolitioners opt for the “save the wood” approach versus the “destroy” approach. The demolitionist we work with, thankfully, reclaim the wood.

Today’s blog post gives you an extensive “behind the scenes” look – through pictures – of the process of demolition and reclamation. The pictures below will allow you to step inside the pioneer barns that dot the Ontario landscape. We have had the pleasure of reclaiming wood for tables, buffets, benches ect ect ect for over 5 years. The market is saying there is value in this very old wood, this historical wood, and we couldn’t be happier! To any demolitioners Â out there – call us before burning! You’ll notice there are many different types of wood dimensions – even in the completely raw form. This is why we design all our furniture around what the raw material already are – avoiding milling and lathing – to provide 100% original face distressing in our final product.

Custom Reclaimed Wood Island in Guelph, ON

Given the waterproof, heat and cold resistant and durable nature of our epoxy/polyurethane finish, we create a lot of island tops and full islands. These can be custom made with any quantity of drawers and doors. Typically the drawers or doors go in one side. Unlike a buffet, the backside of an island is not against a wall, so should be finished nicely on the opposite side. In these cases, we finish these sides in the same style as our doors. 9 ft Trestle Table in Brantford Country Home

When our clearcoat finish is applied, the aged patina of the old barn wood really comes through. The older wood gets, the darker it gets. Since our wood is so old, a lot of patina is present in our raw material. Many ranges of brown-black and paler tones will be our table tops in particular. This makes them great for standing out as a centerpiece in any space. Check out this one we did for a country home in Brantford, ON! (See below)
