Previous Projects

Most of the time; there are “sleeper” beams underneath a threshing floor in an old barn. These large beams support the floor and the structure of the whole barn. That being said, sometimes barns have 3″ joists under the floor or on top of the grainery room. These joists is what we are using for this new option.

Most of our reclaimed wood tables are made from the 2″ barn floor boards, as they have by far the most amount of character marks/ distressing/ staining from organics ect….

Joists are a bit different; but still have a lot of very interesting distressing. They will still have all the old wood patina, as they are the same age; and will still get exposed to weather and rodents ect… This provides a lot of very interesting character. On an old barn floor, the majority of saw marks from when the original floor was cut are gone due to use. Joists, as they aren’t a “used” surface; tend to have a lot of old saw marks.

As a side note, one of the things companies do (in an effort to try and replicate old distressing) is keep the saw marks on new wood. Although it will make a top more rustic; it doesn’t look anything like original saw marks. The way you can tell a saw mark is old is by the amount of black in the cavities. The older the wood, the darker cavities will be. Authenticity shows!!

Check out this table we recently built for a client in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. Although most our clients are in Toronto; we do make it out to all parts of the province [special thanks to the internet].

This client also bought a large reclaimed wood hutch from us; which you’ll see in the background.

The beautiful thing about naturally finished wood [no stain] is there are so many different tones [particularly with reclaimed wood] There are so many different tones in out table tops that one will blend with your floor, one with your railings, one with beams ect ect; making our tables looks good no matter where they go.

Reclaimed Wood Benches

This table (epoxy and matte polyurethane finish) features two benches.

The nice thing about our reclaimed wood benches is maximum seating (think of how many people you can fit at a picnic table); and a great solution for seating children (as they typically don’t require an adult size chair).

This trestle table (with two matching benches) was made for a customer in Wasaga Beach, ON. Here is the client’s testimonial:

For something different..

Mennonite-Built Reclaimed Wood Island finished with epoxy

Although our beautiful epoxy/matte polyurethane finish most efficiently combines practicality with artistic uniqueness, it may not always be the best solution for you.

Eliminating the epoxy process from finishing will make your table more difficult to clean and less waterproof.. but you will feel the grooves and character more [as they won’t be filled]. Some of our customers really want to feel and touch the original distressing, as opposed to seeing it through a thick epoxy finish.

If this is the route you’d like to go with your reclaimed wood table, we can accommodate. Throughout the whole process, we keep in mind what the final finish will be. For someone who decides to do a polyurethane finish without the epoxy filling; we start with flatter boards and avoid extreme hacks and holes. The main goal is to maximize original distressing without making the top too uneven (so that your plates don’t sit flat) or impossible to clean.

Mennonite Built Reclaimed Wood Table

A common style choice for conference tables is our harvest table design – with four legs and skirting. We typically make the skirting and legs black (for a more formal look) and do faux drawer front on the ends for electronics access.

We made this reclaimed wood boardroom for Desire2Learn; a software company based out of Kitchener, ON. They recently opened a new office in Toronto and chose HD Threshing Floor Furniture again [we also did several boardroom tables at their Kitchener location in the historic Tannery District.. check the ‘Office’ under ‘Tables’ to check those out].

We also embedded their logo in the top. This is done by laser-cutting the graphic out of steel; and then routering the graphic into the table top. After this, we flood epoxy over top of the whole table top to encase the logo and bring out the beautiful patina out of the aged wood. The logo contrasts nicely with the threshing floor boards (Pine). Our epoxy with matte polyurethane finish is ideal for boardroom tables as it’s durable and smooth enough to write on easily.

Naturally finished reclaimed wood tables [no stain, only clear coat epoxy and polyurethane] have a lot of tones in them [assuming less sanding; like almost all our tables].

The benefit to this is that, no matter where a barn wood table goes, there will be one tone that grabs your cupboards, one your railings, trim, floor…ect. The rest of the tones create the appropriate amount of contrast and make our tables the centrepiece they’re designed to be.

Consider adding lazy susans to your table for convenient access to your table centrepieces!

Our lazy susans are hand-made by Mennonites with bread-edge boards around the circumference. We use heavy-duty, Lee Valley ball-bearing spinners underneath. Our lazy susans are provided separate from the table (with felt pads underneath), so you can choose to have them on the table or elsewhere.
