My Visit to the Grand Opening of the Biggest Timberframe Structure in the World!

After following the very compelling building process (through Instagram) for over a year, I decided to travel to Kentucky to attend the Ark Encounter’s Â July 7 opening. This engineering marvel uses massive beams, heavy duty construction, large amounts of wood, and simple design – not unlike our furnitureÂ philosophy here at HD.

The large structural beams – an integral component of the frame – particularity caught my eye. You simply don’t see trees of such size in modern times. For decades forests have been designed only for ideal harvesting conditions.

TheÂ Ark peopleÂ couldn’t just cut the trees down. Given their rarity they had to be dying anyway before they could be harvested. To see so many rare beams in a single massive ship was amazing. Walking through the place reminded me of the raw, virgin-growth resources the original pioneers in Canada were lucky to work with (although given the hard work they may not have appreciated it at the time haha). Large trees with tight grain would have been commonplace to the first settlers of North America. This type of old grain wood doesn’t exist any more (except in old barns), since no one is going to wait 150+ years to harvest their bush.

Another element that could be seen throughout the place was the “over-kill”Â construction of everything – from the railings, stairways, flooring – to the structure. The sturdy, no compromise approach made sense when I heard 100 Amish Craftsmen constructed the Ark. They share the same heritage with the Mennonites here in the St. Jacobs region of Ontario, and those in HD Threshing’s building shop.

I alsoÂ enjoyedÂ the opportunity to meet Ken Ham, the visionary behind the whole project. I would recommend anyone Â to check this place out; in my opinion it’s worth the drive from Ontario [about 7-8 hours]. It is very reminiscent of the wood, pioneer building philosophy and practices that were commonplace 100+ years ago here in Ontario!

Large 12 ft Guelph Boardroom Table with Epoxy Finish: Modern & Reclaimed Juxtaposition

Our table tops are made from boards recovered from old barn floors boards in Southwestern Ontario. These boards were abused heavily over a century but stood up due to quality initial building, and the stability of the tight-grain, virgin Canadian forest wood. Most often this wood is used for rustic style cottage furniture, given its roughness. The innovative two stage finish we invented allows this wood to fit perfectly in modern boardroom spaces.

One of our more elaborate desk designs in the vertical 2″ threshing floor board design, as shown below. The vertical 2″ walls are made from threshing floor, with nearly all the original distressing maintained. Inside these walls we put heavy duty, deep drawers. The impressive stance they take is a result of the simple, straight lines design that emphasizes the character of the distressing wood. We make practical for every day work with our thick epoxy and polyurethane finishes. Check out this large size desk we custom built for a customer in Toronto, Ontario:

Custom 10 foot Harvest Table in Windsor, Ontario Made from Reclaimed Barnwood with Epoxy Finish

42″ is standard table width; but we custom build to any width you require. The width you want will depend on how expect your table will be used and the proportions desired. Proportions greatly affect the final look of you table.

For example, 42″ width with a 5 ft length will be a table that looks quite square, but on a 10 ft length, such as pictured below, will look long and narrow.Â Most of our customers prefer a proportionately rectangular size. We usually recommend not going wider than 42 until 8 ft + if you’d like a proportionate size. Some people don’t mind a more square look, however, or a complete sqaure [which we also do]; just depends on the size of the room and volume of seating required.

Check out this reclaimed harvest table we made for a Windsor customer. Although the table appears narrow; it is a full 42″ / 3.5 foot standard width.

84″ Reclaimed Hemlock Barnwood Table and Benches in Waterloo, Ontario Home

Since our raw material is so old, it already has a lot of tones. We don’t try to change these tones; instead preserving them. The more patina we keep, the darker our table top will be. The more we sand out the patina, the broader the tones coming through will be. In general, our table tops have a broad range of tones. This will not only pull in wood tones in a space, but also non-wood tones. Check out this trestle table we made for a client in Waterloo, for example. The rich tones pull in the tones of the large tile floor and designer stone fireplace. See pics below!

8 foot x 42 inch Reclaimed Wood Pedestal Table in Kitchener, Ontario Home: Old Hand-Hewn Beam Posts

Our most popular pedestal base design is hand-hewn beams. These come from the large timber frame structures pioneers built 100 years ago. They were broad-axed by hand to create a timber frame for farm-related purposes. Over their 100+ years these beams took on patina and distressing.. which really stands up in the final product.

We always build the base proportionate to the size of the table top. The nice thing about hand-hewn beams is they are very heavy duty; able to support large sizes on a single post.
